What Is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax levied across India, replacing a complex web of central and state taxes. Introduced on 1 July 2017, it operates on a dual structure — the Centre and States both levy tax on the same supply of goods or services.

For intra-state supplies, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For inter-state supplies or imports, Integrated GST (IGST) applies at the full rate.

🧾
Input Tax Credit (ITC) Businesses can offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales, reducing the tax cascade effect.
📦
HSN & SAC Codes Every goods category has an HSN code and every service a SAC code, which determines the applicable GST rate slab.
🏢
GST Registration Threshold Businesses with turnover above ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services) must register for GST and file regular returns.
