What is VAT?

VAT Value Added Tax is a consumption tax levied on goods and services at each stage of the supply chain, from production through to the final sale. It is ultimately paid by the end consumer, but collected and remitted by businesses registered for VAT.

Unlike a simple sales tax applied only at the point of sale, VAT is charged at every stage of production and distribution. Each business in the chain can reclaim the VAT it paid on purchases (input tax) and only remits the net amount to the tax authority.

🏛️
Government Revenue VAT is one of the largest sources of tax revenue for governments worldwide, funding public services and infrastructure.
🔄
Multi-Stage Collection Applied at each stage of the supply chain manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers with businesses reclaiming input tax.
🌍
Used in 170+ Countries VAT (or equivalent GST) is used by over 170 countries globally, though rates and rules differ by jurisdiction.

VAT Calculation Formula
➕ Adding VAT

Calculate Gross from Net Price

Use this when you have a net (ex-VAT) price and need to find the total amount your customer pays including tax.

Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
VAT Amount = Net × (Rate ÷ 100)
Example: £200 net at 20% → £200 × 1.20 = £240 gross (£40 VAT)
➖ Removing VAT

Extract Net from VAT Inclusive Price

Use this when you have a gross (VAT-inclusive) price and need to find the net amount and the VAT element separately.

Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
VAT Amount = Gross Net
Example: £240 gross at 20% → £240 ÷ 1.20 = £200 net (£40 VAT)
Net
The price before VAT is added. Also called the "ex-VAT" or "exclusive" price. This is what businesses charge each other (B2B).
Rate
The VAT percentage that applies to your goods or service. In the UK this is typically 20%, 5%, or 0%, depending on the product category.
Gross
The final price including VAT. Also called the "VAT inclusive" price. This is what consumers see on receipts and price tags.

VAT Inclusive vs VAT Exclusive
📤

VAT Exclusive (Net)

Price does not include VAT

  • The price shown is the net amount VAT will be added on top at checkout or on the invoice.
  • Standard in B2B transactions because VAT registered businesses can reclaim the tax, so the net cost is what matters.
  • Common in wholesale pricing, trade quotes, and professional service invoices.
  • When you see "+VAT" on a price that's VAT exclusive pricing.
📥

VAT Inclusive (Gross)

Price already includes VAT

  • The price shown is the gross amount VAT is already embedded in the figure and no additional charge is made.
  • Required by law in B2C retail in the UK and EU consumers must be shown the total price they will pay.
  • Common on retail price tags, menus, receipts, and e-commerce product listings.
  • To find the VAT component: divide by (1 + rate/100), then subtract from the gross.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between net and gross amount? +
The net amount is the price before VAT is applied sometimes called the "ex-VAT" or "exclusive" price. The gross amount is the total price the customer pays, with VAT already included. For example, if a product costs £100 net at 20% VAT, the gross (inclusive) price is £120. When selling B2B, you usually quote net prices; when selling to consumers, you must display the gross price.
How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it? +
Switch to the "Remove VAT" tab and enter the gross (VAT inclusive) amount. The calculator will divide the gross by (1 + Rate/100) to find the net, and then compute the VAT element. This is useful for reclaiming VAT on business expenses where you only have the VAT-inclusive receipt total.
Which VAT rate should I use in the UK? +
The UK has three main VAT rates: 20% standard rate (most goods and services), 5% reduced rate (e.g. home energy, children's car seats, some renovation work), and 0% zero rate (e.g. most food, books, children's clothing, and public transport). Always confirm the correct rate with HMRC guidance or a qualified accountant, as misclassification can lead to penalties.
What is the VAT threshold for registration in the UK? +
In the UK, businesses must register for VAT once their taxable turnover exceeds the current HMRC registration threshold (check the HMRC website for the latest figure, as this is reviewed in each Budget). You can also register voluntarily below the threshold. Once registered, you must charge VAT on eligible sales and can reclaim VAT on eligible business purchases.
Can I use this calculator for GST calculations? +
Yes. GST (Goods and Services Tax) used in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, and Singapore works on exactly the same mathematical principles as VAT. Simply enter the relevant GST rate (e.g. 10% for Australia, 15% for New Zealand, 18% for India) and the calculator will work identically.
Is this calculator free to use? +
Yes, Vat Rate Calculator is completely free to use with no sign up, no account required, and no usage limits. All calculations run entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server, and your figures remain private to you.
